Julie Hancher, Principal
Julie Hancher is co-founder & Editor of Green Philly, a local media organization with a mission to make living a sustainable lifestyle easy, economical and fun. With over 10 years of digital marketing experience and determination, she established Green Philly as a company in 2014 to combine her passion and profession. On behalf of Green Philly, she created SustainPHL, Philadelphia’s annual sustainability awards, panel discussions, networking events and more.
When she discovered her employer was throwing our recycling bin contents into the trash in 2008, she started a blog to make sustainability accessible. Although Green Philly began as a tool to educate the community, it has grown into sustainability news and healthy living advice for over 30,000 readers each month. In addition to growing readership 30% on average annually, Green Philly reaches 18,000 active, engaged citizens by email and social media. Green Philly supports local businesses, champions changemakers and advocates for a sustainable, healthy city. During her tenure at Green Philly, her initiatives have resulted in plastic bag legislation, connected readers to careers, and increased security of the Schuylkill River Trail.
Julie is a frequent speaker and featured sustainability expert, and has appeared on WHYY Radio Times, Philly Weekly, Travel & Leisure, Metro, KYW, Philly Voice, Philly Mag and more. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University and completed a Climate Change Science, Communication and Action certificate from Cornell University.
When she’s not behind a computer, you can find Julie hiking, biking or traveling. (Ask her about her cross-country train ride or backpacking.) She enjoys spending time with her family, friends and FLOOF.
